Doubles play highlights first day

BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College Men's Tennis squad opened their fall schedule Friday afternoon at their own tournament, the BC Mountain Invitational. Doubles play was the feature of the men's draw on Friday, and Coach Paul Thomson sent three of his own pairs into action.

In the A Flight, the Tornado squad of Cole Altizer and Jarred Fisher finished with a 1-2 record. Altizer and Fisher opened with a close 9-7 loss to the Pfeiffer team of Lawson and de Witt, then followed it with an 8-3 loss to the North Georgia duo of Patrick and Saulias. But the Tornado tandem recovered with a 9-8 victory in their last match, over Carson-Newman's Slagle and Schwarz. The Pfeiffer duo went undefeated to lead the group.

The B Flight Tornado team of Konstantin Savelyev and Andrew Thompson won two of three matches. The team opened with a hard-fought 8-6 win over Pfeiffer's Flores and Kaushik, and finished with an 8-4 win over Carson-Newman's Kira and Harvie. Sandwiched between those wins was an 8-3 loss to North Georgia's Neto and Carballal, the only 3-0 team in the flight.

Brevard's C Flight squad of Shane Apps and Nate Lyles went 1-2. The Tornado team opened with a pair of losses, 8-4 to Pfeiffer's Pouchet and Worthington and 8-5 to North Georgia's Moore and Augilon. Their lone victory came against Carson-Newman's Acker and Borthick, an 8-6 triumph. The North Georgia team was the flight's undefeated duo.

The men's draw of the BC Mountain Invitational concludes Saturday with the singles tournament.
