Anderson, S.C. - All of the scoring happened in the first half as the Brevard College women’s soccer team was unable to upend the Anderson Trojans on Tuesday evening. The Tornados fell 2-1 at Anderson and are now 3-9-1 on the season with a record of 1-5 in South Atlantic Conference play.
Anderson opened up the scoring in the first eight minutes of play when Jessica Kleinberg scored on a breakaway shooting from about 15 yards out on the left side. Kleinberg took a pass from Carrie Settle to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead.
Anderson made it 2-0 when Krystal Goss scored in the 16th minute. Goss shot at the 15:51 mark and beat the Brevard keeper.
Caitlin Hubbard (Clayton, N.C.) scored her first goal of the season when she was able to beat Anderson’s Kaitlin Neipp to make it 2-1 at 30:50. Hubbard’s goal was the final of the half.
The score remained 2-1 for the final 55 minutes of play as Anderson overtook the Tornados.
Allie Hoevis (Charlotte, N.C.) and Bailey Varley (Concord, N.C.) each played stellar for the Tornados. Varley had a few opportunities to score but was unable to find the back of the net. Abigail Rusch (Franklin, N.C.) was able to set up chances with her great passing throughout the game, while Chelsea Freeman (Charlotte, N.C.) played a crucial role up-front for Brevard.
On the defensive line Lindsay Pritchard (Lexington, N.C.), Janet Basinger (Charleston, S.C.) and Rachel Laughlin (Chesapeake, Va.) kept the Anderson offensive attack in check, allowing them just to get by for the two early goals.
Crissy Moran (Franklin County, Va.) spent the first half in goal for Brevard, while Brittany Webster (Stafford, Va.) played the second half. Webster didn't allow a goal in the final 45 minutes of play, making three crucial saves to keep the match in striking distance for Brevard.
The BC women are back on the pitch when they play host to the Eagles of Carson-Newman on October 20th. Kick-off is set for 4 p.m. at the Brevard College Soccer Field.
