Anderson earns season split with Brevard

Brevard, N.C. - Anderson used a balanced attack paced by an 18 point, 13 rebound double-double by Taylor Shugart as the Trojans offset 15 points by Gaither Hendrix to take home the 90-66 victory over the Brevard College Tornados on Saturday afternoon in Boshamer Gymnasium.

Hendrix led Brevard (7-8, 5-5 SAC) with his 15 point performance, hitting five of 14 shots from the floor, while adding three assists, as the Tornados fell for the fifth straight game. Josh Roper added 10 points and Vincent Dombrowski added 10 off the bench as the Tornados shot 37.3 percent (25-67) from the floor in the contest.

Five players achieved double figures scoring for Anderson (13-7, 7-3 SAC), led by Shugart as the junior center went nine of 14 from the floor. Nick Trull added 17 points off the bench, connecting on five three-pointers, while Brandon Young added 14 points and six rebounds. Kevis Cornwell and Tyrell McDowell added 13 points apiece as the Trojans hit 48.6 percent (36-74) percent of their field goal attempts.

A jumper by Young opened the scoring and Hendrix answered on the next possession as the teams were tied throughout the first minute of the contest. A layup by Trey Britton put the score at 4-2 at the 18:53 mark and the Tornados brought the game back to within two at 9-7 at the 16:29 mark as Hendrix hit a three-pointer, but the Tornados were unable to take the lead as Shugart would answer with a left-handed hook shot in the paint, putting the Trojans up 11-7.

This was as close as Brevard would get in the first half as the Tornados hit just two of 13 three-point attempts as Anderson built a 16 point lead at the 3:48 mark as McDowell drained a three-pointer off the assist from Denzail Jones. The Tornados would close out the first half with a 6-2 run as Jordan hit a layup and Moose scored four points to cut the lead at 36-24 at the half.

The lead extended out to 20 points at the 13:38 mark in the second half as McDowell hit a jumper in the paint, but Brevard was able to close the gap to 12 points following a Jordan layup at the 9:24 mark to put the score at 63-51. This was as close as the Tornados would get in the remainder of the game as Cornwell led the Trojans offense with 11 points in the second frame and Anderson held as much as a 24 point lead with 3:32 to play as Anderson closed out the game with the 90-66 victory.

Anderson held the 45-40 rebounding edge in the game, led by Shugart’s 15 rebounds, while Josh Jordan paced Brevard with a team-high 10. Jordan also led the Tornados with two blocked shots. Jermichael Tanner and Denzail Jones both finished the contest with a game-high five assists to pace both teams’ offenses, while Young and Roper both recorded three steals as the Trojans earned the season split with the Tornados, having fallen earlier this season at the Abney Athletic Center, 85-84.

The Tornados take Sunday off before jumping back into action on Monday evening as they make the trip to Due West, S.C. for a non-conference game against Erskine College. Tipoff between the Tornados and the Flying Fleet is set for 7:30 p.m. in Belk Arena.
