Merriken goes 2-4 with an RBI in loss to Indians

Salisbury, N.C. - John Neese capped a nine-run ninth inning for Catawba College as the Indians overcame a stellar starting performance by Brennan Daniels as the Tornados fell in Newman Park on Sunday evening, 12-4.

Brevard falls to 0-2 on the 2011 season, while Catawba improves to 2-1.

The Tornados struck first in the bottom of the first inning as Kramer Clark laced a one out double down the right field line. Following an Ethan Pressley strikeout, Zack Merriken singled up the middle, scoring Clark as Brevard jumped ahead early, 1-0.

Catawba battled back, taking the lead in the top of the fourth. White doubled to left center to open the inning, reaching third on Josh Hohn’s groundout, before scoring on a Brennan Daniels’ wild pitch to tie the game up at 1. Following a Garrett Furr groundout, Underwood singled and reached third on a throwing error by the Brevard third baseman. The Indians would immediately take advantage of the error as Zubillaga and Lawson hit back-to-back doubles as Catawba plated three in the inning to take the 3-1 lead.

The Tornados would cut into the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Ron Patterson opened up the inning with a single to right center, reaching second on Kameron Armacost’s grounder to the second baseman. Following a walk to Christian Christopoulos, Brett Brinson grounded out to the third baseman, moving Patterson and Christopoulos over. Patterson crossed the plate on a wild pitch by J.J. Jankowski to put the score at 3-2.

Brevard plated runs in both the bottom of the seventh and the eighth as Brinson drove home Armacost on a groundout and Alex Bedenbaugh scored on a throwing error by the Indians third baseman in the eighth as Brevard took the 4-3 lead heading into the final frame.

Five walks and two wild pitches marred the ninth inning as Catawba sent 12 batters to the plate and saw nine runners score in building a 12-4 lead. Cameron White and Hohn recorded RBI doubles, while John Neese hit a three-run home run to centerfield in the inning before Alex Litaker was able to get Keaton Hawks to ground out to end the inning.

The Tornados went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the ninth to end the game.

Will Huneycutt (1-0) recorded the win for the Indians, striking out a batter, while allowing a run in the eighth inning, while White did most of the damage at the plate for the Indians, going two for four with a pair of doubles and two RBIs. Jacob White (0-1) recorded the loss fro the Tornados, while Merrikan was Brevard’s offensive leader with a pair of hits and an RBI.

Brevard will continue the 2011 season on the road as they travel to Due West, S.C. on Thursday, February 10th, as they take on Erskine College. First pitch at Grier Field is for the nine inning contest is set for 2 p.m.
