Brevard, N.C. - Despite outshooting King, the Brevard College women's soccer team was unable to overcome an early goal by Morgan Shelton in falling on the BC Soccer Field on Saturday afternoon, 2-0.
Brevard (0-2) attempted a season high 17 shots in the match, led by Jamie Bundy’s (Platte City, Mo.) four, but BC was unable to find the back of the net in being shutout for the first time in the 2011 season.
Shelton had a pair of goals for King (1-0) in the Tornado season opener, striking in the sixth and the 74th minutes in the match, while Abbey Kitts recorded her first shutout in the 2011 season.
King challenged BC goalkeeper Brittany Webster (Stafford, Va.) early as Jamie Grigsby launched a shot 3:33 into the contest, but Webster made the save leading to Brevard’s first opportunity in the match, but the shot by Rachael Laughlin (Chesapeake, Va.) was pushed wide left.
At the 6:27 mark, Shelton took possession of the ball in the BC goal box and attempted a shot into the upper left corner of the net, but the ball was deflected off a Brevard defender into the lower right corner, away from a diving Webster before settling into the back of the net and putting King up 1-0.
The Tornados would launch 10 more shots in the first half, with Bundy taking several on free kicks on King’s side of the field, but BC was unable to convert as the teams went into the half with the score 1-0.
Shelton would strike again in the second half at the 74:09 mark, receiving the pass from Casey Shanklin near the top of the box. As BC keeper Crissy Moran (Franklin County, Va.) came out to challenge, Shelton lofted the ball up from 18 yards out, sailing over Moran’s head and into the right side of the net, putting the score at 2-0.
The Tornados put together one final challenge late in the contest as Laughlin again attempted a shot, but the ball sailed past the goal, ending the contest.
Brevard will make their first road trip of the 2011 season on Wednesday, September 7th, as they travel to Aiken, S.C. to take on USC Aiken. Kickoff between the Tornados and the Pacers is set for 5 p.m.
