Freeman and Bundy score as Tornados win in final road contest

Spartanburg, S.C. - Senior forward Bailey Varley added to her BC career record total with a pair of goals and Chelsea Freeman and Jamie Bundy both found the back of the net as the Tornados topped the Valkyries on Wednesday evening, 4-1.

Megan Jenkins and Rachael Laughlin started off the attack for the Tornados (3-13) recording shots on goal in the first ten minutes as Brevard outshot Converse (2-14-1) 23-14 on the afternoon, but both offerings were turned away by Katie Wasylko to keep the shutout intact.

Varley gave Brevard the early lead at the 11:55 mark as Bundy lofted a free kick into the box, toward the Concord, N.C. native, and she headed the ball home to put Brevard up 1-0.

Elena Crowe and Caitlin Hubbard both attempted to expand the lead with shots on goal, but Wasylko again proved up to the task. Converse’s Lisa Ryan nearly tied the match but her offering deflected off the crossbar at the 21:41 mark to keep the BC lead intact.

The Tornados broke the defensive stalemate early in the second half, recording the first four shots of the period before Freeman connected on her second goal of the season, beating the defense at the 54:11 mark to put the score at 2-0.

The teams battled through the remainder of the half before getting into a frantic final 10 minutes as Converse cut into the lead at the 82:33 mark. Kristen Headden beat BC goalkeeper Crissy Moran on the second chance opportunity from Joy Keith on a Valkyries’ fast break opportunity to put the score at 2-1 with seven minutes to play.

Varley answered three minutes later at the 85:48 mark to put the lead back at two, beating the Converse defense with her second score of the contest, and Jamie Bundy added a late insurance goal at the 88:41 mark, drilling the ball in from 16 yards out to clinch the win for the Tornados.

Brevard returns home on Saturday, October 29th as they finish the 2011 regular season against South Atlantic Conference opponent Catawba College. The Tornados will recognize their nine seniors, Jordan Box, Alyssa Caracena, Caitlin Hubbard, Bailey Varley, Chelsea Watson, Rachael Laughlin, Janet Basinger, Chelsea Freeman and Danielle Burch after the contest in a brief ceremony on the BC Soccer Field. Kickoff between the Tornados and the Indians is set for 2 p.m.
