Dahlonega, Ga. - Dominique Pickett scored 10 points and Darius Moose added nine in the first game of the afternoon in the Peach Belt/SAC Challenge, but four players from Montevallo reached double figures including a game high 18 by D.J. Rivera as the Tornados fell in Memorial Hall Basketball Gymnasium to the Falcons, 83-40.
Gaither Hendrix hit a three-pointer on the opening possession of the game off the assist from Drew Schauss to give the Tornados (0-2) the early lead, but Jeff Hefner and Jervan Jackson followed with back-to-back baskets to give the Falcons (2-0) their first lead of the game en route to building a commanding 42-19 advantage at the half on their way to going undefeated on the weekend.
Pickett scored a career high 10 points for the Tornados, connecting on 4-of-8 field goal attempts from the floor, including two three-pointers to lead Brevard in the contest, while Moose also went 4-of-8 for nine points and five rebounds in the game. Drew Schauss added five rebounds and five points to pace Brevard as the Tornados were unable to overcome 22 turnovers in the loss.
Rivera led the Falcons with 18 points in the contest as Montevallo connected on 57.6 percent (34-59) of their field goal attempts in the contest. Drico Hightower added 17 points off the bench, while Jackson had 13 points and seven rebounds to lead the Falcons to their second win of the season. Marvin Fitzgerald added 11 points and Hefner had a team high eight rebounds to end the weekend for Montevallo.
The Tornados won the opening jump ball and wasted zero time in putting points on the board as Schauss hit an open Hendrix at the top of the key and the senior from Lenoir, N.C. connected on the three-pointer to give Brevard the 3-0 advantage. Hefner followed with a layup to narrow the lead and Jackson hit a short jumper in the paint to give the Falcons their first lead of the contest at the 18:09 mark as Montevallo went on a 28-6 run spanning the first 9:53 of the game to take a 28-9 lead following a three-point play by Fitzgerald.
A layup by Hightower gave the Falcons their largest lead of the first half at 32-11 with 7:25 to play in the period, but the Tornados battled back behind back-to-back three-pointers by Pickett and Jermichael Tanner to cut the lead back to 32-17, but Montevallo closed out the half with a 10-2 run to go into the break with the 42-19 lead.
The Falcons scored the first 12 points in the second half to extend their lead and put the game out of reach and though the Tornados battled back behind five second half points by both Moose, Schauss and Pickett, Montevallo was able to close out the contest with the 83-40 victory.
Brevard remains on the road in non-conference action as they travel to Tigerville, S.C. to take on North Greenville University on Wednesday, November 16th. Tipoff between the Tornados and the Crusaders in Hayes Gymnasium is set for 7 p.m.
