Asheville, N.C. - Gerel Simmons scored a career high eight points and David Worth and Taylor Warren both hit their first career collegiate baskets, supporting Gaither Hendrix’s team high 16 points, but UNC Asheville pulled away late in the first half in defeating Brevard 89-48 on Monday evening in Kimmel Arena.
Hendrix cracked double digits for the fifth time this season in leading Brevard (0-6) with 16 points, while Simmons scored all eight of his points in the second half as the Tornados shot 37.0 percent from the floor in the contest. Filip Gujanicic added eight points on 4-for-6 shooting, while Drew Schauss and Darius Moose manned the boards, pulling down six and five rebounds respectively for the Tornados.
Matt Dickey was a perfect 6-for-6 from the floor in leading all scorers with 19 points as UNC Asheville (2-2) had 13 players find the basket in the contest. Keith Hornsby added 12 points, while Jon Nwannunu added 10 points and six rebounds for the Bulldogs. J.P. Primm set up the Asheville attack with eight points and eight assists as UNC Asheville wins their second consecutive game against South Atlantic Conference schools.
UNC Asheville opened the game scoring 10 of the first 12 points as Dickey scored five of the first 10 points and assisted on a three-pointer by Primm, but Hendrix led the Brevard charge in the opening minutes, scoring the first seven points for the Tornados as Asheville held the 17-7 lead at the 12:43 mark in the first half.
Four consecutive points by Nwannunu put the score at 21-7, but the Brevard cut into the lead as Filip Gujanicic hit the layup off the backdoor pass from Drew Schauss and Dominique Pickett drained a three-pointer from the left corner off the pass from Michael Gist at the 11:18 mark to cut the lead back to within single digits at 21-12.
Keith Hornsby and Dickey three-pointers sandwiched a Gujanicic layup off the assist from Pickett as the Bulldogs went on a 15-4 run to take a 36-16 lead with 5:17 left in the half. The Tornados fought back as Vasiljevic hit a free throw and layup and Hendrix connected on his second trey of the first half as the Tornados went into the break trailing 48-22.
Simmons scored all eight of his points in the second half and Chavis Hamilton and Hendrix combined with Simmons to score the first 14 points of the half for the Tornados, but the Bulldogs continued to expand the lead in the second half.
Worth scored his first collegiate basket at the 2:16 mark and Warren added a three-pointer on the final possession of the game as the Tornados fell to UNC Asheville, 89-48.
Brevard returns home on Saturday, November 26th, for their home opener in Boshamer Gymnasium against Belmont Abbey College. Tipoff between the Tornados and the Crusaders is set for 4 p.m.
