Brevard, N.C. - Gaither Hendrix and Darius Moose had the hot hands from the floor and Michael Gist recorded a career high six blocked shots, but Newberry battled back, tying the game up at 90 apiece before Quayshun Hawkins drained a buzzer-beater just inside the half court line as the Tornados fell in Boshamer Gymnasium to the Wolves, 93-90.
Moose tied the game up for the tenth time, draining a three-pointer from the top of the key with 25 seconds left on the clock, giving the Wolves (15-10, 9-8 SAC) one final chance in the game. The ball was slapped away from Hawkins, but the Wolves recovered to call their final timeout with 2.2 seconds remaining on the clock. The inbounds play went to Hawkins, and his three-pointer from the right side of the court in front of the BC (5-22, 4-13 SAC) student section went in as the buzzer sounded to end the contest.
Hendrix led all players with 28 points as Brevard shot over 50.0 percent (30-58) from the floor for the third consecutive game inside Boshamer Gymnasium, as the senior guard drained five three-pointers and added five assists in the contest. Moose added 22 points on 9-of-11 shooting from the floor, narrowly missing out on his third double-double of the season. Gist recorded his first career double-digit scoring game, electrifying the crowd with a dunk for Brevard’s first score in ending the game with 10 points to go with six blocked shots.
Hawkins led five Wolves players with 19 points and added seven rebounds as Newberry shot 45.9 percent (34-74) from the floor in the game. Dondray Walker added 15 points, while Tomas Tomasson connected on three treys in scoring 13 points. Savad Garner and Shamel Akins were also in double-digits with 10 points apiece.
The alley-oop to Gist opened up the scoring for the Tornados, but Newberry opened up the game on a 16-4 run as a jumper by Hawkins gave the Wolves the double-digit lead with 14:07 on the clock. The lead expanded to 13 at 29-16 on a Hawkins three-pointer at the 7:09 mark gave the Wolves their largest lead of the contest.
The Tornados battled back, closing out the half on a 20-6 run, tying the game up for the second time as Aleksandar Vasiljevic went in for the layup with 2:11 on the clock, knotting the game up at 34 apiece. Garner hit the first of a pair of free throws to give the Wolves the lead, but Jermichael Tanner followed with a floater in the paint to give the Tornados the 36-35 halftime advantage.
The second half was battle back and forth as the teams traded the lead 11 times, tying eight times in the final 20 minutes of the contest.
The Tornados built their largest lead of the game as Hendrix drained back-to-back three-pointers and Dominique Pickett followed with a three-pointer from the left wing to put Brevard up 61-52 with 13:20 on the clock. However, Newberry battled back on three-pointers by Hawkins and Aegir Steinarsson, keeping the game within striking distance.
The Tornados retained the lead for the following four minutes, but Walker gave the lead back to the Wolves on a jumper in the paint at the 8:39 mark, setting the stage for the battle in the final minutes.
Newberry went up 90-87 on a layup by Hawkins at the 1:51 mark and threatened to pull away, but a pair of blocked shots by Gist and Hendrix kept the Wolves on the board, leading to Moose’s game-tying three-pointer.
Hawkins followed with his dagger as time expired, silencing the crowd in Boshamer Gymnasium to complete the season sweep for the Wolves.
Brevard returns to the road for their 2012 season finale as they travel to Wingate, N.C. to take on Wingate University. Tipoff between the Tornados and the Bulldogs is set for 4 p.m.
