Gaffney, S.C. - Brevard College split their first two games in the weekend Limestone Tournament hosted by Limestone College on the Saints Softball Field. The Tornados topped Alderson-Broaddus in the first game of the day defeating the Battlers 6-1, but Brevard fell in the nightcap of the event to the host Saints, 3-2.
Game One: Brevard 6, Alderson-Broaddus 1
Backed by another strong pitching performance by Kayla Clemens, the Tornados topped the Battlers in Brevard’s first action on Saturday afternoon, with Emily Boykin providing most of the damage with a three-run home run in the sixth inning.
The Tornados broke open the scoring in the game, putting two across the plate in the second inning as Boykin and Maddie Fletcher drew back-to-back one out walks and Brittany Jones reached on a single to load the bases. Brittany Fowler followed by coaxing a walk from Ali Neace to bring Boykind across the plate and Meredith Davenport scored Fletcher on a fielder’s choice to give Brevard the 2-0 lead.
Brittany Tucker gave the Tornados an insurance run in the third inning, singling in Chelsi Mallory with two outs to keep Brevard in control of the contest.
Clemens kept the shutout alive heading into the bottom of the sixth before Boykin followed a Clemens’ double and Tucker’s single up the middle with a three-run shot over the right field fence to give Brevard the commanding 6-0 lead.
The Battlers spoiled Clemens’ shutout attempt as Vanessa Bodily and Mary Meyer led off the inning with back-to-back doubles, but the sophomore right-hander retired the next three batters to end the contest.
Clemens went the distance in the contest, scattering five hits while striking out five in the game, while Tucker led the BC bats with two of the five Tornados hits in the game.
Game Two: Limestone 3, Brevard 2
After two quiet innings, BC got on board first with Chelsi Mallory doubling to left center to score Brittany Fowler from second base in the top of the third inning.
Limestone answered back with a run of their on the bottom half of the inning as Shelby Webb led off with a single and moved to second on Guse's bunt base hit. After a sacrifice bunt, Dallas Heaton brought Webb home on single to left field to even the score at 1-1.
The Saints put two more on the scoreboard in the fourth, as Kirstyn Burleson led off the inning with a double to right field. Jordan Smith followed her with single to left field to move Burleson to third. After Smith stole second base, Alex Brown gave Limestone the lead on a sacrifice fly to left field. Smith scored a few pitches later on wild pitch from Alyssa Miller that skirted by Boykin.
Brevard got back on the board in the sixth inning with Mallory starting it off with a single to first base, moving over to second on a sacrifice bunt. Brittany Tucker then launched a ball deep to right field that Burleson corralled at the wall, but it was deep enough bring Mallory in for the Tornados second run.
However, the comeback fell short as Leah Quant retired the Tornados in order in the seventh to take the win.
Brevard was led at the plate by Mallory who was 2-of-3 with an RBI. Miller took the loss as she went all six innings while allowing three runs on seven hits.
Brevard remains on the road on Sunday, February 26th as the Tornados finish up the Limestone Tournament with games against California (Pa.) and Limestone. First pitch between the Tornados and the Vulcans is set for 10 a.m., while the Tornados close out the tournament against the host Saints at 2 p.m.
