Newberry, S.C. - Emily Boykin carried the Brevard offense in game one, while Chelsi Mallory smashed a three-run home run in the nightcap as the Tornados recorded the conference sweep on Wednesday afternoon at the NC Softball Field against Newberry College, 3-1 and 6-1.
Kayla Clemens (10-11) and Alyssa Miller (6-7) both went the distance for the Tornados (16-18, 5-7 SAC) in the doubleheader sweep, while Hailey Harris (2-2) and Shelley Jeffcoat (3-8) suffered the losses for the Wolves (14-19, 0-10 SAC).
Game One: Brevard 3, Newberry 1
Boykin drove in the first two runs of the game and Maddie Fletcher singled in a run in the top of the sixth as Clemens scattered six hits in recording her 10th victory of the season.
The Tornados opened the scoring in the top of the fourth as Mallory drew a walk to lead off the frame. A sacrifice bunt pushed the senior second baseman into scoring position, and she moved to third on Brittany Tucker’s two-out single through the infield. Boykin followed with an infield base hit, scoring Mallory for the first run of the contest.
Brevard expanded on their lead in the top of the sixth inning as Boykin doubled in Clemens with two outs in the frame and Fletcher followed with an RBI single up the middle, scoring her to stake Clemens to a commanding 3-0 lead.
Newberry answered with their first run of the contest in the bottom of the sixth as Tasia Diaz doubled in Brittany Phillips with a shot to left centerfield, and threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases with two outs. Clemens was able to retire the final Newberry batter on a foul out, keeping the Brevard victory intact as the Tornados took game one, 3-1.
Game Two: Brevard 6, Newberry 1
Brevard built a 6-0 lead after four innings, thanks in part to a three-run home run by Mallory over the left centerfield fence, and Miller retired 10 strikeouts as the Tornados closed out the sweep over the Wolves.
The Tornados opened the scoring in the top of the third plating four runs with two outs in the frame as Brevard followed a walk issued to Brittany Jones with five consecutive hits to go up 4-0 over the Wolves. Jones broke the scoreless tie, crossing the plate on Tucker’s bunt single, before Mallory drove a 1-0 pitch over the fence, scoring Tucker and Brittany Fowler to put the Tornados up by four.
Brevard continued to build on their lead in the fourth inning as Tucker’s base hit to left centerfield scored Fowler and Jones as Brevard staked Miller to a 6-0 lead midway through the game.
Newberry cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth, ending the shutout bid as Phillips singled in Casey Makawatase, but the Wolves were unable to bring the game back within reach in falling 6-1.
Brevard returns home to the BC Softball Field, remaining in South Atlantic Conference play as the Tornados welcome Wingate University on Saturday, March 31st. First pitch between the Tornados and the Bulldogs is set for 1 p.m.
