Etowah, N.C. - Katie Thackerson led wire-to-wire and Lenoir-Rhyne overcame a 10 stroke deficit in winning the Women’s Aramark Collegiate Invitational on Tuesday afternoon at the Etowah Valley Country Club.
Thackerson held off North Greenville’s Denise Shirley by two strokes as the duo recorded matching 78s on the final round, as the Lenoir-Rhyne athlete earned medalist honors with a 158 over the two day tournament. Shirley finished two strokes back with a two-round total of 160 to take sole possession of second place, while teammate Anna Padgett finished the tournament with a 168 to take third place overall.
L-R’s Grace Brahler finished in sole possession of fourth place with a 172 after two days, while Erskine’s Rachel Moore and Mars Hill’s Jacqueline McCormick both recorded podium finishes, tying for fifth place overall with matching 175s.
Lenoir-Rhyne recorded the lowest team round of the tournament on the final day, knocking 19 strokes off their first round as the Bears held off North Greenville by three strokes to take the team title. Erskine finished in third with a score of 731, while Mars Hill and tournament host Brevard rounded out the five schools in contention during the tournament.
For the Tornados, Marlaina Garman led Brevard, cutting 11 strokes off her first round score to finish 10th overall with a 185 over the two days.
Emily Smith and Allie Hovis recorded matching scores on the second day to finish 16th and 22nd overall in the tournament, while Kelsey Wyatt rounded out the group for Coach David Nelson, finishing 23rd overall as the Tornados completed their final tune-up before next week’s 2012 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference tournament.
Brevard returns to the links next Monday at the Rock Barn Golf & Spa in Conover, N.C. as the Tornados take part in the 2012 Food Lion SAC tournament.
