Brevard, N.C. - Kaitlyn White and India Kornegay led the Pacers to a 6-0 shutout victory in the opener between USC Aiken and Brevard, but the Tornados battled back in the second game as Emily Boykin drove a three-run double and Alyssa Miller excelled on both the mound and at the plate as Brevard earned the split with the 5-2 victory in the nightcap.
Brevard moves to 20-21 on the season with the split, while the Pacers move to 24-11 on the year after the Wednesday contests.
Game One: USC Aiken 6, Brevard 0
White went 4-for-4 from the plate with a run and an RBI, while Kornegay shut down the Brevard offense, scattering five hits while striking out eight in recording the 6-0 shutout in the first game at the BC Softball field.
Kornegay (19-8) and Clemens (12-13) traded scoreless innings through the first three frames before Lindsey Jones reached on a one-out single up the middle in the top of the fourth for the Pacers. Cortney Sadler followed, reaching on an error to move Jones into scoring position. Victoria Burkett followed with an RBI single through the left side of the infield, plating the first run of the ball game.
The Pacers added two more runs in the top of the fifth as Kayla Denham drove in Brandy Bossle as the Tornados misplayed a bases loaded popup, allowing a run to score from third. Sadler followed two batters later with a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring White to improve the visitors lead to three.
White added an RBI in the top of the sixth, doubling in Bossle, while Hillary Stewart added an RBI single to left in the seventh inning. Denham scored the final run of the contest, crossing the plate on a wild pitch to give the Pacers a 6-0 lead heading into the final frame.
Brittany Jones reached on a one-out single to right centerfield, but Kornegay closed out the game retiring the final two batters to end the contest.
Game Two: Brevard 5, USC Aiken 2
Emily Boykin cleared the bases in the bottom of the first with a double to the fence in centerfield, while Alyssa Miller (8-8) went a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate and pitched four innings to pick up the win as the Tornados earned the split against the Pacers.
White continued to have the hot stick on the day, leading off the game with a triple to the left centerfield gap, but Miller pitched her way out of trouble to keep USC Aiken off the board.
The Tornados offense erupted in the bottom of the frame, leading off with Brittany Fowler reaching on a walk from Samantha Lemm (5-3). Brittany Tucker sacrificed her over to second, and Brevard loaded the bases as Chelsi Mallory drew a walk and Clemens reached on a fielder’s choice. Miller snapped the string of shutout innings with a base hit up the middle, scoring Fowler, and Meredith Davenport followed with a grounder deep in the hole at shortstop, with all runners advancing safely to keep the bases loaded.
Boykin followed with a blast to the fence in centerfield clearing the bases and chasing Lemm from the contest as the Tornados went up 5-0 in the first inning. Kornegay closed out the inning, but the damage was done as Brevard held the lead early.
Aiken battled back with two runs in the top of the fourth as Jones and Bossle reached with singles in the inning. White brought both home with a triple down the left field line, past the diving Brevard left fielder to cut into the Brevard lead.
Clemens came in relief for Brevard in the fifth, escaping jams in both the sixth and seventh innings to record three scoreless frames, striking out one to record her first save on the season.
Brevard returns to the road tomorrow evening as the Tornados travel to Bristol, Va. to take on Virginia Intermont College. First pitch between the Tornados and the Cobras is set for 4 p.m.
