Conover, N.C. - Kim Koivu leads the Tornados after the first day at the 2012 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Men’s Golf tournament, following a first round 75 with a second round 76 to sit tied for 13th overall, while Brevard sits eighth overall with a first day 630.
Wingate University leads the tournament, sitting at even par after the first two rounds, while Newberry and Carson-Newman round out the top three in the tournament. Newberry’s Matthew Campbell leads all players in the tournament, finishing the first day sitting at 4-under, 140 for the day to lead all players by four strokes.
A rough hole on eight left Koivu in a bind in the first round, as the SAC Freshman of the Year went from 2-under to 2-over par on one hole, carding a seven on the par three. He bounced back to sit in a tie for 13th overall after the round. Koivu however finished out the final round of the afternoon on a high note, recording birdies on two of the final three holes to finish with a 151, 7-over par on the afternoon, 13th overall on the day.
Thomas Rennie bounced back from a tough first five holes in which the senior was 6-over, by recording birdies on three of the final 13 holes to sit tied for 13th after the first round. He made his way through an up-and-down second round, recording birdies on holes two, six and 16, to finish the round 6-over par, and sitting in a tie with Carson-Newman’s Jonathan Kim-Moss for 16th overall.
Michael Stamper recorded three birdies on the afternoon, recording under-par scores on hole five twice, as well as hole seven in round two in finishing the first day with a score of 17-over, 161 to sit in a three way tie for 35th overall in the tournament.
T.J. Hoard also recorded three holes under par on the day, recording birdies on holes two and 18 in the first round, and followed with a birdie on hole 16 in the second round, finishing with a score of 165, 21-over par on the day to hold sole possession of 40th place in the tournament.
Diego Ortiz improved on his first round score by one stroke in the second round, recording his lone birdie on the afternoon on hole 18 in the first round. He finished the day with a score of 173, 29-over par to sit 47th after the first day.
Final round action at the Rock Barn Golf & Spa begins tomorrow morning as the 10 South Atlantic Conference teams close out the 2012 Food Lion SAC Tournament.
