BREVARD COMEBACK FALLS SHORT

Salisbury, N.C- The Brevard College men's basketball team erased a 10-point halftime deficit with a strong start to the second half, but eventually dropped a 71-69 contest to the Catawba College Indians in Goodman Gym on Wednesday night.

A Manzey Miller layup with eight seconds left in the game brought BC within a point at 70-69 before the Tornados were forced to foul on the ensuing inbound play to stop the clock. Catawba's Nick Houston made one-of-two free throws to make it a 71-69 game with just under five seconds remaining.

The Tornados called a timeout to draw up the final shot, but a Gerel Simmons three-point attempt for the win narrowly missed as time expired.

The Tornados went into halftime down 44-34, but roared out of the break on a 14-4 run to tie the game at 48-48. Freshman Matt Ward capped off the 22-9 run with a jumper to give the Tornados their largest lead of the game at 56-53.

Catawba tied the game at 56-56 with a three-pointer on their next possession with 9:18 remaining in the game. The two teams exchanged several leads as the second half wore on, but Catawba's Tyrece Little gave the Indians a two-point lead they didn't relinquish on a fast break at 4:15.

Ward led the Tornados offensive charge with 17 points while shooting 7-for-11 from the field, including 3-of-6 from beyond the arc. Dominique Pickett and Miller also finished in double figures for BC, dropping 14 and 13 respectively.

The Tornados are back in action as they host the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday, January 12th. The tip is set for 4 p.m.
