Mars Hill, N.C.- The Brevard College men’s basketball team swept their season series with the Mars Hill Lions with a 76-73 win in Stanford Arena on Saturday afternoon.
The Tornados put together a 20-1 run midway through the second half, capped by a Gerel Simmons free throw that gave the Tornados a 56-48 lead with just under 10 minutes remaining in the game.
Brevard trailed by as many as 13 in the first half and overcame an 11-point second-half deficit to pick up their second South Atlantic Conference win of the season.
Four Tornados posted double figures in the scoring column for Brevard, paced by 21 points from Dominique Pickett. Simmons dropped 19 while Manzey Miller had 15, and each pulled down six rebounds.
Filip Gujanicic chipped in a career-high 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the floor, including 3-for-4 from three-point range. The sophomore also grabbed five rebounds.
The Tornados eventually grew their lead to 13 on a Pickett free throw with 2:36 left in the game before the Lions scored 11 unanswered points to cut BC’s lead to 75-73 with 1:01 remaining.
Gujanicic drew a foul with :22 seconds left after grabbing an offensive rebound, and hit his first free throw to make it 76-73.
Mars Hill’s Kevin Haynes missed with a game-tying three-point attempt in the final seconds to seal the win for Brevard.
Freshman Alex Moe filled the stat sheet with team-highs in both rebounds (7) and assists (5) in addition to five points.
The Tornados look to make it two in a row as they host the Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters in Boshamer Gymnasium on Wednesday night at 8 p.m. The Railsplitters were victorious 75-51 in the first meeting in Tex Turner Arena on January 16th.
