Hickory, N.C.- A strong second half for the Lenoir-Rhyne women’s basketball team pushed the Bears past Brevard College 58-53 in South Atlantic Conference action on Saturday afternoon in Shuford Memorial Gymnasium.
The Bears engineered a 15-4 run late in the second half to turn a six-point disadvantage into a 53-48 lead on a Danielle Bongiorno layup with 3:25 left in the game.
The Tornados cut their deficit down to two points on a layup by Micheala Watkins with 1:31 remaining in regulation, but couldn’t score on their final three possessions.
The Tornados led 23-21 going into the break, and had built an eight-point lead early in the second half after a 10-2 run capped by a Shelby Wolfe layup at the 12:40 mark.
Wolfe led the Tornados with a game-high 13 points while grabbing a team-high eight rebounds. Micheala Watkins had nine points, and finished with game-highs in both assists (five) and steals (five).
The Tornados remain on the road this week as they visit the Newberry College Wolves on Wednesday night at 6 p.m. The Wolves took the first meeting 65-55 in Boshamer Gymnasium back on January 23rd thanks to dominant interior play.
