Hickory, N.C.- The Brevard College men’s basketball team outscored Lenoir-Rhyne 9-1 in the opening minutes on Saturday night, but ultimately couldn't stay with the Bears in a 71-60 loss in Shuford Memorial Gymnasium.
BC scored the game’s first seven points before the Bears quickly tied the game at 11-11 with a three from R.J. McClure at the 15:16 mark in the opening half.
A free throw from Miles Leathers at 14:49 briefly put the Tornados back in front before a jumper from Mark Terrell put the Bears ahead for the duration of the game.
Terrell’s jumper sparked a 13-2 Lenoir-Rhyne run, and the Bears were able to take a 37-26 lead into the break.
The Tornados opened the second half on an 11-4 run to cut their deficit to four points, but the Bears answered with an 11-4 run of their own to push their lead back to 11.
McClure led all scorers with 23 points for the Bears, while B.J. Beasley posted a double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds.
Leathers finished with a team-high 17 points for the Tornados while also securing a team-high seven rebounds. Gerel Simmons was the only other Tornado in double figures with 14 points.
The Tornados are on the road again this week as they visit the Newberry College Wolves on Wednesday night at 8 p.m. The Wolves won a high scoring 106-88 game in Boshamer Gymnasium on January 23rd.
