Brevard, N.C. – Wingate’s Eddie Lewis knocked down a heavily contested three as the clock expired in overtime to propel the Bulldogs to an 88-87 victory over the Tornados in Boshamer Gymnasium on Saturday evening.
The officiating crew gathered following the final buzzer to confer whether Lewis’ foot was on the three-point line, ultimately deciding his foot was behind the line and that the shot was indeed a three-point basket for the win.
BC’s Manzey Miller had hit a three with 8.9 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Tornados an 87-85 lead. Miller led all scorers with 20 points, finishing 7-of-9 from the field and 5-of-7 from beyond the arc.
The Tornados erased a 20-point first-half deficit with a 36-17 run late in the second half, capped by a pair of foul shots from Miles Leathers to tie the game at 78-78 with 43.2 seconds left.
The Tornados gained their first lead of the contest when Leathers put BC up 80-78 with a pair of free throws at the 4:17 mark in the overtime period. Leathers had 16 points, three rebounds and three assists.
Dominique Pickett finished with 17 points, while Gerel Simmons dropped 16 to round out BC’s double-figure scorers. Alex Moe secured a game-high nine rebounds.
The Tornados are on the road this week as they visit the Anderson Trojans at Abney Athletic Center. The Trojans handed BC an 82-60 loss in their first meeting in Boshamer Gymnasium on January 26th. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
