Brevard, N.C.-Five Tornados scored in double figures to lift the Brevard College men’s basketball team to an 85-76 victory over the Tusculum Pioneers in their season finale in Boshamer Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
Freshman Manzey Miller led the way with 23 points, finishing 7-for-10 from the floor and 5-for-6 from the foul line.
The Tornados were a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line over the final 40 seconds to ice the game. Miller and Gerel Simmons each hit four free throws during the span while Dominique Pickett nailed a pair.
Simmons and Pickett each scored 18 for the Tornados while combining for 14 rebounds, including a game-high eight from Simmons. Miles Leathers chipped in 14 while Matt Ward finished with 11 to account for all of BC’s double-figure scorers.
The Pioneers led or were tied from the 13:11 mark in the first half all the way until a Leathers layup with 14:25 left in the game gave BC a 50-48 advantage.
After a Nick Spinks layup tied the game at 50-50, the Tornados engineered an 11-2 run to take a 61-52 lead with 10:11 left in the game.
The Pioneers, however, did not go down without a fight. Tusculum clawed back to within a point on a Spinks free throw with 1:58 remaining before the Tornados capped the game on a 13-5 run over the final 1:41.
