Brevard, N.C. –The Brevard College Tornados baseball team split a doubleheader with the Mars Hill Lions at Gil Coan Field on Sunday afternoon, falling 4-3 in the first game before rallying for the series win with a 5-2 victory in game two.
Game One – Mars Hill 4, Brevard 3
Mars Hill scored the game-winning run in the 5th on a Tyler Shuler RBI double after the Lions put together back-to-back singles with one out.
The Lions got to BC starter Brennan Daniels (L, 1-1) for four runs over 5.1 innings on the hill, and took a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the 2nd.
Kody Spencer scored on a double play grounder in the 2nd after leading off with a double. BC tied it in the 4th on a Matt Proffitt fielder’s choice grounder that scored Champ Stuart and an Eric Renegar single.
Game Two – Brevard 5, Mars Hill 2
BC starter Nick Blackwood (W, 1-1) held Mars Hill to just two runs (one earned) over seven innings in the complete-game effort, scattering nine hits and two walks while striking a pair.
BC jumped on Mars Hill starter Josh Dean (L, 0-3) for three runs in the bottom of the 1st on two runs and two hits. Kody Spencer lifted a sacrifice fly to score Aaron Goforth before Renegar and Alex McGee deliver run-scoring singles to give BC a 3-1 advantage.
The Lions made it a one-run game in the 5th after a BC fielding error, but the Tornados picked up a pair of runs in the bottom of the 6th to take a three-run lead into the 7th.
Mars Hill’s Tommy Scala started the 7th with a single but was promptly doubled off on a line drive to second base off the bat of Tyler Shuler, and Blackwood fanned Thomas Timmerman to end the game.
