Greenwood, S.C.- The Lander University Bearcats earned a pair of one-run victories over the Brevard Tornados in a doubleheader on Wednesday evening, edging BC 5-4 in game one before rallying for a 7-6 victory in the 8th inning of the second game.
Game 1: Lander 5, Brevard 4
Lander freshman Bethany Beggs drove in the game-winning run with a groundout as part of a three-run 5th inning for the Bearcats.
Trailing 2-1 heading into the 5th, the Tornados rallied for three runs to take a 4-2 lead on an Emily Boykin RBI single and two-run double off the bat of Brittany Tucker before the Bearcats answered in their half of the 5th.
Kayla Clemens, who tossed 1.2 innings of scoreless relief for starter BC starter Jamie Hrobak (L, 3-5), finished 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI to lead BC at the plate.
Game 2: Lander 7, Brevard 6
Beggs came through for the Bearcats again in game two, delivering a walk-off single in the bottom of the 8th inning to lift Lander to a 7-6 victory and doubleheader sweep.
The game went into extra innings tied 5-5, and the Tornados scored the go-ahead run in the top of the 8th on a Heather Morris fielder’s choice groundball to make it 6-5.
Lander first tied the game at 6-6 on a Brittney Sheriff RBI single to set the stage for Beggs’ walk-off base hit.
Kayla Clemens (L, 2-5) threw a complete-game, striking out eight over 7.2 innings on the hill for the Tornados.
The Tornados return to action as they visit Johnson C. Smith on Thursday afternoon for the second time this season after sweeping a doubleheader from the Bulls on February 12th.
