Charlotte, N.C.-The Brevard College Tornados softball team erupted for 29 runs and 30 hits in a doubleheader sweep of the Johnson C. Smith Bulls at Biddleville Park on Thursday evening, taking decisive 19-1 and 10-2 victories. The Tornados knocked 19 hits in the 19-1 victory, a new Brevard College record for hits in a single game.
Game One – Brevard 19, JCSU 1
The Tornados scored in every inning but the 5th in the run-rule shortened game, highlighted by a seven-run 4th inning. The 19 hits in single game eclipsed the standing record of 18, set against Southern Wesleyan on March 9th, 2010.
Brittany Tucker led six Tornados who had multiple hits by going 4-for-4 with four RBI’s and three runs scored. Five other Tornados drove in multiple runs while seven scored multiple runs.
The Tornados were already in front 12-0 heading into the bottom of the 3rd when the Golden Bulls scored their lone run.
Jamie Hrobak (W, 4-5) cruised through five innings on the mound, allowing just one earned run on two hits and four walks while striking out four Golden Bulls.
Game Two – Brevard 10, JCSU 2
Alyssa Miller led the way for the Tornados in the second game, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI while limiting the Bulls to two runs in a complete-game effort on the hill.
Miller (W, 1-2) pitched around five hits and five walks while striking out seven, allowing the Tornados to take a 4-0 lead over the first three innings.
The Golden Bulls made it 4-1 in the bottom of the 4th before the Tornados posted three runs in both the 6th and 7th to put the game out of reach for Johnson C. Smith.
Brittany Fowler also finished 3-for-4 and had three runs scored and two RBI’s while Tucker posted another solid game at the plate, driving in three runs and finishing 2-for-4.
The Tornados open South Atlantic Conference play on Saturday as they host the Mars Hill College Lions for a doubleheader at 1 and 3 p.m.
