Winston-Salem, N.C.- The Brevard College Tornados snapped a 14-game win streak for Winston-Salem State with a 10-4 win over the Rams at BB&T Ballpark on Tuesday evening.
The Tornados jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the 1st inning after Champ Stuart walked to lead off the game, and stole second and third before scoring on an RBI single from Eric Renegar.
Renegar then stole second and moved to third on a base hit from John Slade, and scored on Kody Spencer’s sac fly to make it 2-0. The Tornados scored the final two runs on a fielding error by the Rams’ shortstop.
The Rams scored two in the 3rd and one in the 5th against BC starter JD Chaplain (W, 1-1) to make it 4-3 after four innings. Chaplain fanned three over four innings, allowing five hits and two walks before the BC bullpen held the Rams to a run over the final five innings.
Ryan Mercer threw two scoreless innings in relief of Chaplain to get the Tornados through the 6th with a 6-3 lead after BC scored two in the top of the 6th. Stuart delivered a run-scoring single before Renegar lifted a sac fly to center.
BC padded their three-run lead with a Bennett Hixson RBI single in their half of the 7th before BC reliever Nick Blackwood retired the side in order in the bottom of the 7th.
Brevard added three more runs in the 8th to take a 10-3 advantage. John Slade worked a bases-loaded walk to force in a run before Chris Christopoulos drove in two more with a single to left with two outs and the bases loaded.
Blackwood surrendered a solo homer and a pair of walks in the 8th before BC called on Zach Joyce, who retired the final six Winston-Salem Sate hitters in order.
