Newberry, S.C.- The Brevard College Tornados softball team swept a doubleheader from the Newberry Wolves on Tuesday afternoon thanks to excellent starting pitching and timely hitting, earning a shutout 3-0 win in the opener before taking the nightcap 3-1 at Smith Road Complex.
Game One: Brevard 3, Newberry 0
Brevard’s Kayla Clemens (W, 4-7) stifled the Wolves with a complete-game shutout in the opener, holding Newberry to four hits and a walk while striking out five. Newberry’s Darrian Jamison spoiled Clemens no-hit bid with a single in the 6th.
The Tornados took a 1-0 lead in the 5th after Emily Boykin reached on a fielding error to lead off and moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt followed by a single. Alyssa Miller delivered a two-out infield single to score Boykin and break the scoreless tie.
Brevard added two insurance runs in the 6th on Brittany Tucker’s fifth homer of the season, a two-run jack to center field with one out.
Game Two: Brevard 3, Newberry 1
Alyssa Miller (W, 3-3) limited the Newberry offense in game two, allowing one run on six hits and three walks in the complete-game effort.
Brittany Jones smacked an RBI triple in the 3rd to give BC a 1-0 lead before Tucker followed in the 4th with an RBI double to make it 2-0 Tornados. Tucker drove in another run in the 6th with a single up the middle to give BC a three-run lead.
Tucker finished 3-for-6 with four RBI’s on the afternoon, while Clemens and Brittany Fowler both had two hits in game two.
The Wolves scored on an RBI single in the 7th before Miller struck out the final batter, stranding a runner on third to give BC the sweep.
BC returns to action as they host Georgia College & State for a doubleheader on Thursday afternoon beginning at 1 p.m.
