Brevard, N.C.- The Newberry College Wolves completed the series sweep of the Brevard College Tornados by taking both games of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Gil Coan Field.
Game 1: Newberry 15, Brevard 2
The Wolves pounded out 15 hits against seven different Brevard pitchers, scoring in all but two innings to win the opener.
Newberry jumped on BC starter Zach Joyce (L, 1-5) for seven runs (six earned) on six hits and a walk in 1.2 innings. The Tornados bullpen was also ineffective for the most part, allowing eight runs (seven earned) in 7.2 innings of work.
The Wolves had a 9-0 lead by the time the Tornados got on the board with Cody Queen’s RBI single in the bottom of the 3rd, and BC didn’t score again until John Slade’s solo homer in the bottom of the 9th.
Newberry starter Brandon Ahrens (W, 4-3) allowed just one run in five innings, although BC had five hits and a walk against the righty.
Game 2: Newberry 11, Brevard 2
Newberry kept the momentum going for the nightcap, posting five runs in the top of the 2nd against Brevard starter JD Chaplain (L, 1-2).
After Newberry added a run in the top of the 5th against BC reliever Ryan Mercer before BC made it a 6-2 game with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Champ Stuart and Eric Renegar worked back-to-back walks to start the inning, with Stuart scoring on an RBI groundout by Chris Christopoulos and Renegar on a groundout by Queen.
Newberry only extended their lead from that point, adding three in the 6th and two in the 7th to put the game out of reach for BC.
