COOK, CANALE EARN PRESEASON FIRST TEAM ALL-SAC IN CROSS COUNTRY

Brevard Tabbed Seventh

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Brevard College sophomore Hannah Cook and senior Angela Canale were named to the Preseason All-SAC first-team while the Tornados were selected seventh in the preseason coaches’ poll, the conference announced Thursday.

Lenoir-Rhyne earned the top spot in the women's preseason poll after winning the 2012 SAC Championship by a margin of 10 points over runner-up Wingate. The Bears received nine first-place votes in the poll, while second-ranked Wingate got two.

Anderson is third in the poll, followed by No. 4 Mars Hill and No. 5 Queens, which also received one first-place vote. Anderson finished third at last year's SAC Championship, Mars Hill placed fourth, and Queens finished 10th at the Conference Carolinas Championship.

Cook, last year’s SAC Freshman of the Year, and Canale, who had four top-10 finishes in 2012, will pace the Tornados as they were picked seventh and return three runners from last season.

"Hannah and Angela have been very consistent in their training this summer,” said first-year head coach Adam Malloy about the upcoming season. “They are two individuals who really just love the sport, so preparation and hard work come naturally. Their hard work is evident in their current fitness level. They will be integral to the team this year. Any success they have will be echoed by the other women."

Rounding out the poll is Carson-Newman at eighth and Catawba atninth. Tusculum is No. 10 in the poll, followed by No. 11 Coker and No. 12 Newberry. Tusculum finished ninth and Newberry 10th last year at the SAC Championship, while Coker placed 12th at the Conference Carolinas Championship.

Mars Hill paced the conference with four selections, while Lenoir-Rhyne and Wingate collected three each.

Joining Cook and Canale on the women's first team is 2012 SAC Women’s Runner of the Year Keeley Wood of Wingate, Mars Hill's Kristen Trammel, Anderson's Sydney Hazel, Lenoir-Rhyne's Marie Mauhar and Laura Rhyne.

Brevard opens its season at the Eye Opener Invitational in Spartanburg, S.C. at Milliken Park on Sept. 6.
