Brevard Picked Fifth

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Brevard College senior Patrick Helmick was named to the Preseason All-SAC second-team, while the Tornados were selected fifth in the preseason coaches’ poll, the conference announced Thursday.

Mars Hill received the highest possible number of first-place votes (11) under the voting structure. The Lions were dominant at last season's Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Cross Country Championship, winning the team title by 70 points over second-place Wingate.

Wingate is second in the 2013 preseason poll and received the other first-place vote. Wingate is followed by Lenoir-Rhyne, Lincoln Memorial and Brevard. Lenoir-Rhyne, Lincoln Memorial and Brevard finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively, at last season's SAC Championship.

Helmick will be one of seven seniors to lead the experienced Tornados squad. The Milford, Del., native, finished the 2012 slate with five top-20 finishes.

"This is a great honor for Patrick, who finished last cross country season as our top runner,” said first-year head coach Adam Malloy. “He has had some injury problems this summer, but he has been committed to cross training so his transition to running has been easier. I expect him to be a big contributor once again."

Continuing the men's poll is SAC-newcomer Queens in sixth, while Anderson is at No. 7, Tusculum at No. 8 and Newberry at No. 9. Anderson placed sixth, Tusculum seventh and Newberry eighth at the 2012 SAC Championship.

Completing the men's poll are No. 11 Coker and No. 12 Carson-Newman. Coker placed seventh at last year's Conference Carolinas Championship, while Carson-Newman finished 10th at the SAC Championship.

Mars Hill was well-represented with five selections, including three on the first-team. Wingate and Lincoln Memorial had two each while Brevard, Tusculum, Newberry and Anderson had one each.

Brevard opens its season at the Eye Opener Invitational in Spartanburg, S.C. at Milliken Park on Sept. 6.
