BREVARD, N.C.- The Brevard College volleyball team downed the Virginia-Wise Cavaliers 3-1 in their 2013 season opener in Boshamer Gymnasium on Thursday night.
The Tornados took the first two sets 25-21 and 25-23, respectively, before Wise recovered with a 25-22 win in the third set. The Tornados then sealed the win with a 25-23 victory in the fourth set.
The Cavaliers used five unanswered points in the final set to take a 19-16 lead before BC engineered a 9-4 run to end the game. Fatima Gharachorloo, who led BC with 19 kills, delivered the match-winning point on a set assist from senior Kayla Hanus.
Hanus finished with 25 set assists, while freshman Bailey Hayes collected 21 assists in her first game as a Tornado.
Two other Tornados finished with double-digit kills as Erin Rollins and Camille Cameron turned in 13 and 11 kills, respectively. Brevard hit at a .319 clip for the match while holding the Cavaliers to just a .178 hitting percentage.
The Tornados capitalized on a 9-2 run in the opening set to take a commanding 20-13 lead before coasting to a 25-21 set win. BC turned in a .619 hitting percentage in the first set.
The two teams went back and forth in the second set and were tied as late as 21-21. Back-to-back kills from Cameron gave BC a two-point advantage, and kills from Rollins and freshman Jasmine Robinson to end the set gave BC a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Cavaliers took the final three points of the third set to break a 22-22 tie and cut the BC lead to 2-1. Karley Allen led Virginia-Wise with 14 kills while Lindsey Tucker and Santana Bishop also pitched in double-figure kills for the Cavaliers.
With Thursday’s win the Tornados have won their season opener every year since joining the South Atlantic Conference in 2008.
The win also marked the first career collegiate victory for first-year head coach Kelly Burdeau.
The Tornados look to keep the ball rolling as they take on the Lander Bearcats in the opener of the North Greenville Invitational Tournament tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m. in Tigerville, South Carolina.
