CLINTON, S.C.- The Brevard College Tornados led Presbyterian College by a touchdown at two different points during the first half before the Blue Hose posted 21 unanswered points to defeat BC 42-24 in the Tornados season opener at Bailey Memorial Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Brevard quarterback Tanner Wright connected with Tydrell Wright for a 36-yard touchdown pass with 3:05 remaining in the opening half to tie the game at 21-21. Wright finished 5-for-8 with 122 yards in the air and a pair of passing touchdowns.
The Blue Hose promptly responded with an eight-play, 74-yard drive to take a 28-21 lead into the break.
Presbyterian quarterback Kaleb Griffin found Joey Gilkey for a 22-yard touchdown reception to give PC the touchdown lead at halftime, which sparked the string of 21 unanswered points for the Blue Hose.
The Blue Hose outscored BC 14-3 in the second half as the Tornados scored their only points after the break on a 29-yard field goal from Ben Noboa with 18 seconds left in regulation.
The Tornados scored on the game’s opening drive, engineering a 76-yard drive capped by a Jordan Ollis three-yard touchdown run to take a 7-0 lead.
After PC’s Jeremiah McKie tied the game with a 50-yard punt return for a touchdown, Brevard’s Andre Overholt hauled in a 36-yard touchdown pass with 2:55 left in the opening quarter to give the Tornados a 14-7 advantage. Overholt finished with three catches for 81 yards.
The Blue Hose scored back-to-back touchdowns to take a 21-14 lead before the Wright touchdown reception tied the game. The sophomore finished with two catches for 41 yards.
Brevard’s Kelvin Jeter rushed for a game-high 102 yards on 19 touches while Ollis finished with 62 yards on 18 carries. Wright scrambled for 24 yards on ten attempts and Xavier McEachern picked up 14 yards on four carries.
Both teams rushed for exactly 202 yards and neither side committed a turnover. The Blue Hose outgained the Tornados, 376 to 324, and picked up 22 first downs to Brevard’s 18.
Griffin threw for 174 yards and a touchdown for PC, finishing the afternoon 13-for-18. Demarcus Rouse led the rushing attack for the Blue Hose, picking up 82 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Three other PC ball carriers also rushed for touchdowns.
The Tornados look to improve to 1-1 next Saturday as they travel to Charlotte, N.C. to take on College of Faith for a 4 p.m. kickoff. The Blue Hose, meanwhile, travel to Greenville to take on in-state Furman University at 12 p.m.
