CATAWBA RALLIES PAST BC

BREVARD, N.C.- The Brevard College Tornados took the opening set against Catawba College before the Indians rallied for a 3-1 win over BC in South Atlantic Conference action in Boshamer Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.

The Indians prevailed 23-25, 25-12, 25-12 and 25-18 to improve to 1-3 (1-1 SAC), while BC falls to 3-3 (0-2 SAC).

Brevard got out to a 7-2 lead in the opening set before Catawba evened it at 8-8. The Tornados took three straight points with the set tied at 10-10 to take the lead for good.  Sophomore Fatima Gharachorloo delivered nine kills in the set to help BC to a 1-0 advantage, including kills on the set’s final two points.

The Tornados were hot to start second set, taking a 7-4 lead after a service ace from Bailey Hayes. The Indians called a timeout before scoring eight unanswered points to go ahead 12-7.  Catawba used a 9-1 run to end the set and tie the match at one apiece.

A kill by Erin Rollins brought the Tornados within two points at 9-7 in the third set before the Indians rattled off a 12-1 run to put the set out of contention.

The Tornados stayed within striking distance for the entirety of the final set despite an early Catawba lead. BC used a 6-1 run to cut the Indians lead to 18-15 before Catawba answered with a 3-1 run.

A kill by Jasmine Robinson later brought Brevard within three at 21-18 but represented BC’s final push as Catawba ended the game with four unanswered points.

Gharachorloo collected a game-high 15 kills, while Rollins added 11.  Hayes delivered 23 assists to go with a pair of service aces.

BC freshman Aleksandra Vrvilo collected a match-high 11 digs.

The Tornados are back in action Thursday night in an exhibition match at Division I Gardner-Webb in Paul Porter Arena at 6:30 p.m. Brevard resumes South Atlantic Conference play as they visit Mars Hill on September 20th.
