BC TRAVELS TO MARS HILL FOR CONFERENCE SHOWDOWN

The Tornados can move into a tie for eighth with a win

Winners of two consecutive conference matches, the Brevard College men’s soccer team looks to continue its winning ways when it travels to Mars Hill for a crucial South Atlantic Conference match Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. at Belk Field in Mars Hill, N.C.

• This matchup has plenty of postseason implications on it while Mars Hill currently sits eighth in the conference with 12 points and the Tornados hold the ninth position with nine points. The top-eight teams advance to the SAC Soccer Championship Tournament beginning Nov. 5. With a win, BC would climb into a tie for the last spot with Mars Hill, but would hold the tiebreaker with two matches remaining. With a loss, the Tornados would fall at least four points out of eighth and would need to win the next two and receive outside help. A tie would keep the Tornados three points back of the Lions with a possibility of jumping them in the last week.

• Following a 1-0 win against Anderson Tuesday, BC (5-8, 3-5 SAC) matched the most wins in school history (2008) since becoming a Division II program and won three conference matches for the first time since joining the SAC. The Trojans entered the match as the top-ranked squad in the Southeast region. The Tornados’ lone goal came from sophomore Drew Gallowitch in the 36th minute while senior Jami Uuttu earned the assist. Freshman Heath Turner collected his second shutout of his career while accumulating three saves on the day.

• No Tornado has started every match this season. Ryan McPhillips, Augusto Isern, Winston Haddock, Alec Goettl and Turner have started all but one. Rhem Stubbs and Isern are the only two players to appear in every match this season. Turner is second in the South Atlantic Conference with 58 saves while McPhillips paces the team with five goals, 11 points and 20 shots. 21 different Tornados have recorded a shot during the 2013 campaign.

• Paulo Silva, Mercelo Betcer, Uuttu, Stubbs and Goettl have recorded double figures in the shot category this season.

• Mars Hill enters the match with a 4-9, 4-5 SAC record. However, the Lions have dropped four consecutive matches, while being blanked in three of them. Mars Hill dropped a heartbreaker to Carson-Newman, 2-1, Wednesday while allowing a goal in the 89th minute.

• Serge Kebbeh leads the Lion offense with 26 shots while Alex Mullen paces the team with eight points. Goalkeeper Chris Mitchell leads the team with 31 saves, three wins and a 1.22 goals against average.

• Mars Hill has dominated BC in the series lately, blanking the Tornados three of the last four matches, including a 1-0 victory last season.

• BC head coach and Athletic Director Juan Mascaro enters his seventh season at the helm for the Tornados while assistant coach Bradley Morrison is in his first year.
