BC remains winless on the road

MARS HILL, N.C.- The Brevard College men’s soccer team fell on the road to Mars Hill, 3-0, on a chilly Friday night in South Atlantic Conference action at Belk Field in Mars Hill, N.C.

The Lions (5-9, 5-5 SAC) snapped a four-match losing skid and picked up three crucial points in a tight race to the SAC Soccer Championship Tournament. The Tornados (5-9, 3-6 SAC) saw a two-match win streak come to a halt while remaining winless (0-7) on the road in 2013.

Mars Hill struck in the 17th minute when Thor-Joakim Stenberg netted his first goal of the season after corralling a loose ball in the box following a corner kick and chipping it past BC goalkeeper Heath Turner.

In the 69th minute, the Lions extended their lead to two thanks to a successful Felipe Ferraro penalty kick.

Mars Hill delivered the knockout out blow five minutes later (74th minute) when Thomaz Freitaz found the back of the net after receiving a nifty pass from Ferraro at the top of the right side of the box.

BC challenged the Mars Hill defense in the first half while notching four shots, but the Lions D clamped down and allowed only one shot in the second half.

The Tornados allowed a season-high 26 shots while Mars Hill recorded 14 and 12, respectively. Thanks to the barrage of shots, Turner matched his career-high in saves with 12, including seven in the first half. Mars Hill’s Chris Mitchell recorded his third clean slate of the season and had two saves.

Serge Kebbeh paced the Lion offense with seven shots while Ferraro tallied five. The Tornados’ Efren Escobar notched two of BC’s five shots.

With the loss, the Tornados postseason were dented, but not dashed. BC has two conference matches remaining and trails Coker by four points for the final seed. BC travels to Coker next Saturday.

The Tornados look to continue their home success (5-2) when they welcome Lenoir-Rhyne in a virtual must-win SAC match Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Brevard Soccer Field in Brevard, N.C.  BC will honor seniors Jami Uuttu, Pauli Jussila, Adam Martin, Paulo Silva and former player Jake Parker prior to the match.
