EARLY DEFICIT DOOMS BC AGAINST NORTH GEORGIA, 68-42

BC returns to action tomorrow at Furman

BREVARD, N.C.- The Brevard College women’s basketball team was unable to crawl out of an early 23-point deficit and fell in its season-opener against North Georgia Monday evening at Boshamer Gymnasium in Brevard, N.C.

The Nighthawks (1-0) saw three players record double digits in the game while Jaymee Carnes paced both teams with 19 points. The Tornados (0-1) dropped only their second home-opener in the last six seasons.

“It was tough matchup for some of our better players,” said head coach Shannon Reid. “I scheduled this game specifically for that reason. It’s a tough conference (SAC), so, a cupcake schedule won’t help us at all in this league and our girls understand that.”

North Georgia jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first 60 seconds before BC’s Katie Williams drained a triple to make it a one-point game, 4-3, in the early goings.

However, the Nighthawks offense came to life going on a 14-0 run over the next 3:36 to stretch their lead to 18-3. Junior Taylor Hiatt hit her first of two three-pointers to snap the scoreless drought to bring the Tornados within a dozen.

North Georgia hit five of its next six shots to extend the lead to 23, 31-8. BC was unable to cut into the lead as it headed into half, 38-18, despite a six-point outburst from freshman Madison Lenox.

The Tornados shot 20% from the floor (6-for-30) in the first half while North Georgia hit 44.4% (12-for-27).

Both teams played square through most of the second half while the Nighthawks only outscored BC by six, 30-24.

BC would cut the NGU lead to 19, 46-27, when Chezney McJunkin drilled a trey and forcing the Nighthawks to call a timeout with 11:30 remaining.

However, Carnes tallied five of the teams’ next seven points. The Tornados followed up with an 8-0 run thanks to a pair of free-throws from Williams and a Hiatt three with 6:24 remaining, but couldn’t chip away at the lead beyond that.

NGU’s Carnes enjoyed a solid performance while accumulating 19 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks. Teammate Stephanie Huffman tallied 17 points along with eight boards.

Lenox paced the Tornados with 13 points and three steals while Shelby Wolfe led the team with six rebounds while a trio of Tornados grabbed five boards each on the night.

“Madison (Lenox) did some really big things coming off the bench tonight,” said Reid. “She was attacking it aggressively.”

Brevard committed 19 turnovers while forcing 18. North Georgia totaled 45 rebounds, but BC held the advantage on the offensive glass, 14-10.

BC is amidst a tough three games in the three days schedule and will travel to Furman for an exhibition game tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. at Timmons Arena in Greenville, S.C.
