BREVARD, N.C.-The Brevard College men’s basketball team erased a nine-point deficit with less than seven minutes remaining against Lees-McRae on Wednesday night, but ultimately dropped a 94-89 decision to the Bobcats in their season opener in Boshamer Gymnasium.
Trailing by nine with 6:50 left in the game, the Tornados engineered a 15-4 run to take an 89-87 lead on a Darius Moose layup with just over a minute remaining. A Trevon Shaw three-pointer with 1:55 left tied the game at 87-87. Dominique Pickett, who paced BC with 25 points on the night, had five points during the run.
The go-ahead layup by Moose gave the Tornados their first lead since a 64-63 edge less than six minutes into the second half. The Bobcats would go on to score seven unanswered points following Moose’s basket to escape with the victory.
Moose finished with a double-double, netting 24 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. The redshirt junior helped BC to a 49-48 halftime lead with 17 points in the first half.
Jacquise Moore poured in a game-high 29 points to lead the Bobcats, who improve to 3-0 on the season. Darius Smith was the catalyst for Lees-McRae, distributing a game-high 11 assists.
Brevard is back in action as they visit Radford University for an exhibition on Saturday at 4 p.m. The Highlanders took an exhibition from BC 81-53 in the Dedmon Center last November.
