Brevard, N.C. – The Brevard College men’s basketball team will open up their 2008-09 regular season at home this Tuesday night, as Coach Jones’ squad will host Warren Wilson College for a 7 p.m. tip-off.

The Tornados are coming off a week in which they played not one, but two exhibition contests against NCAA Division I and Big South Conference member schools in Gardner-Webb University and Radford University.

Brevard had strong showings in both exhibition games.  In the first game against Gardner-Webb a week ago, the Tornados opened up the game with a three-pointer by senior Joseph Chilton to take an early lead.  GWU caught up shortly after and took a 36-27 lead into the halftime break.  The Tornados controlled the pace of the game in the second half, limiting the Runnin’ Bulldogs to only 26 points and got to as close as one at 49-48, but were unable to catch up to GWU, falling 62-52.

On Friday night against Radford, the Tornados struggled in the first half offensively but were led by pre-season All-SAC second team member Jonathan Whitson who scored a game-high 23 points and hauled in a game-high eight boards.  After being down 44-17 at the halftime intermission, the Tornados outscored the Highlanders 38-30 in the final 20 minutes of play, holding Radford to only nine made field goals in the half.  However, it was too little too late as BC fell to Radford 74-55.

Joining Whitson are starters Andrew Freeman and Joseph Chilton, who both scored in double-figures against Gardner-Webb.  Returners and starters from a year ago, Sean Ferretti and Cody Siniard will also see a lot of minutes and give the Tornados much needed help off the bench.  Redshirt juniors Nathan Whitmire, Darin Dellinger and Sam Carlisle will look to add balance to the Tornados as well as give BC more offensive firepower in 2008-09.  Junior Shane Galloway and senior Radosav Babic will continue to see minutes and be expected to be instant offense off the bench, stretching the defense with their ability to knock down the long range shots.

The Tornados are much deeper in 2008-09, as Coach Jones’ played 12 different players in the two exhibition games last week.

Warren Wilson has already got a head start on Coach Jones’ and the Tornados, as the Owls are already six games into their season, posting a 3-3 record under first year head coach Kevin Walden.

The Owls are led by a dynamic backcourt duo in sophomore Aleksander Spasovski and senior Jermon Marsh.  The two have combined to lead Warren Wilson in scoring in five of the team’s first six games, with both scoring double-figures in all six of the Owls contests thus far this season.

The game is set for a 7 p.m. tip off at Boshamer Gymnasium.

For those who can make it to the game, the BC Athletics department in collaboration with the Campus Activities Board would like to recognize National Hunger and Homelessness awareness week.  Students who bring at least TWO non-perishable canned food items get a BC backpack for FREE.
