NEWBERRY, S.C.-Brevard College’s Katie Williams hit a pair of free throws to make it a one-point game with one second remaining but the Tornados couldn’t find the equalizer in a 61-58 loss to the Newberry College Wolves in Eleazer Arena on Saturday afternoon.
BC (4-10, 3-7 SAC) was forced to foul following Williams’ free throws, and a Shelby Wolfe personal sent Tasia Holdorf to the line for Newberry (9-5, 5-5 SAC) with less than a second remaining. Holdorf hit both foul shots to make it a three-point game and the Tornados were unable to get a shot off after inbounding the ball with less than a second on the clock.
The Tornados were trailing 59-54 with 17 seconds remaining in the game before a furious Tornado rally pushed the game to the wire.
Madison Lenox hit a layup with nine seconds remaining to make it 59-56 before BC took a 30-second timeout. A steal by Taylor Hiatt with three seconds left resulted in the Newberry foul that put Williams on the line.
The Tornados led 27-26 at the half but the Wolves used a 15-4 run midway through the second half to take a 10-point lead, forcing BC to work from behind for the rest of the contest.
Williams paced BC with 18 points, including an 8-for-9 effort from the foul line and a team-high three assists. Wolfe added 15 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
The Tornados return home on Wednesday night as they host the Anderson Trojans in Boshamer Gymnasium for a 6 p.m. tipoff. The Trojans took round one 90-54 in Abney Athletic Center on November 20th.
