ROCK HILL, S.C. – Brevard infielder Bennett Hixson and pitcher Zach Joyce have claimed the SAC baseball weekly awards following a double-header sweep of conference-foe Catawba on Sunday.
"It's been a good week for our program, I don't think we've ever had both the player of the week and the pitcher of the week," said head coach Matt McCay. "We're really proud and excited for those guys."
Hixson finished 3-of-6 with four RBI in the two games against Catawba, driving in the game-winning runs in both Tornado victories.
In game one, Hixson had two hits and three RBI, highlighted by a walk-off, bases-loaded single in the bottom of the seventh. He later singled in the game’s only run in the nightcap, sending BC to the series victory.
Hixson is hitting an even .300 on the season with a .364 on-base percentage and six RBI.
Joyce tossed a complete-game shutout in BC’s 1-0 seven-inning game two victory over Catawba, allowing just one hit while striking out six. The win evened the Tornados’ overall record at 3-3.
Joyce has now thrown 14 innings on the season, posting a 1.29 ERA and eight strikeouts. Opponents are hitting just .195 against the right-hander.
