BREVARD, N.C.- The Brevard College baseball team split a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader with the Wingate Bulldogs at Gil Coan Field on Saturday afternoon, taking a 6-5 walk-off win in 10 innings in the opener before falling 1-0 in game two.
Game 1: Brevard 6, Wingate 5
Eric Renegar reached on an infield single in the bottom of the 10th inning and moved to second a throwing error by Wingate shortstop Michael Godinez. Pinch hitter Ryan Ahlum laid down a sacrifice bunt, which Wingate reliever Brett Morgan (L, 1-1) threw into left field trying to nail Renegar at third to allow BC to score the winning run.
Brevard righty Carson Anderson (W, 1-0) tossed a scoreless 10th inning, pitching around a leadoff walk and a throwing error to strand the go-ahead run at second.
The Tornados had scored three runs to take a 5-2 lead in the bottom of the 8th on three hits and three WU errors, but the Bulldogs tied the game at 5-5 in the top of the 9th to force extras.
Game 2: Wingate 1, Brevard 0
The Tornados couldn’t get any offense going in game two against Wingate starter Ben Currie, who held the Tornados scoreless with a seven-inning complete game. The righty allowed only three hits and fanned 10 while pitching around three walks.
The Bulldogs scored the game’s lone run on an RBI single in the top of the 1st inning against BC starter JD Chaplain. The righty struck out two while allowing four hits and walking a pair in five innings on the hill.
Freshman Hunter McBride and senior Dustin Haithcox kept Wingate off the board for the last two innings but the Tornados couldn’t find the equalizer in their final two at-bats.
The Tornados are back in action on Tuesday as they visit the North Greenville Crusaders. First pitch from Ashmore Field is set for 3 p.m.
