WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.- The Brevard College softball team handled Winston-Salem State 10-3 in the opener thanks to five RBI’s from Casey Whitaker before falling 6-5 in the nightcap at Paul Cloud Field on Wednesday afternoon.
Game 1: Brevard 10, WSSU 3
Whitaker tied a Brevard College record five RBI's on a pair of homers to help the Tornados score a season-high 10 runs in game one. The junior parked a three-run homer in the 1st to help BC to a 3-0 lead and a two-run shot in the 4th.
Whitaker finished 3-for-4 as the Tornados collected ten hits as a team. Alyssa Miller finished 2-for-4 with two RBI’s and Emily Boykin added two hits and a RBI.
Jamie Hrobak (W, 6-4) limited the Rams to five hits in the complete game, surrendering three runs (two earned) while fanning a season-high 12 batters.
Game 2: WSSU 6, Brevard 5
Dallas Heaton doubled with two outs in the 7th and moved to third on a Whitaker infield single but BC wasn’t able to score the tying run against Yasmin Lee (W, 1-1).
The Rams broke a 3-3 tie with three runs in the 5th inning and held of a BC rally in the 6th to escape with the split.
Brevard got back two runs in the 6th as Whitaker scored on a throwing error and Ally Davenport drove in Lauren Parker with an RBI groundout. Emily Boykin doubled to center with two outs but was stranded.
Jamie Hrobak (L, 6-5) entered in relief of Casey Whitaker in the 1st inning, and didn’t allow an earned run over the final 5.2 innings. However, the Rams three-run 5th was the result of a BC throwing error.
The Torandos are back in action on Saturday in a rescheduled doubleheader at USC-Aiken at 1 p.m.. The doubleheader against the Pacers was originally scheduled for Thursday, but moved due to forecasted inclement weather.
