ROCK HILL, S.C. - Winthrop University (6-6) of the Big South Conference stomped on the Brevard College (1-8, 0-1 SAC) men’s tennis team 9-0 while hosting the Tornados on March 14th at Memorial Courts.
The match took a Winthrop advantage early in doubles after David Taggart and Rory Northam paired up against the Eagles pair to lose 8-1 in the No.1 doubles. Teammates Christoph Plasa and Guilherme Prophirio represented No.2 doubles as they played Michael Chen and Yuta Hirokawa of Winthrop. The Tornados could only possess two points as the Eagles flew by with eight.
The No.3 doubles spot followed the same pattern with George Finch and Nathan Sabate representing BC and Corey Decandia and Chase Altieri for the Eagles. WU captured the 8-3 win over Brevard to finish doubles.
Taggart started singles with Brevard already three points down against Hirokawa. David wasn’t able to gain a point for Brevard and fell 6-3, 6-2 in his singles set.
Winthrop managed to sweep out Brevard several times during singles. Peter Nagovnak took on Brevard’s Prophirio in No.5 sinlges sweeping 6-0 in each.
Brevard will return with a home match against Coker College on Sunday, March 16 at McCoy Tennis Complex beginning at 2:00 p.m.
