NEWBERRY, S.C.-The Brevard College softball team fell 9-3 and 7-1 to the Newberry Wolves in a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader at the Smith Road Complex on Saturday afternoon.
Game 1: Newberry 9, Brevard 3
Brevard scored three runs over the final two innings but it wasn’t enough to overcome an early 6-0 Newberry lead.
Casey Whitaker got BC going in the 6th with an RBI groundout to score Kinny Davis before Kinsey Parrish singled in Dallas Heaton to make it a four-run game.
The Wolves added three more runs in their half of the 6th against BC starter Jamie Hrobak (L, 7-5), who was charged with all nine runs (eight earned) in six innings in the circle.
Michelle Ray and Lauren Parker started the 7th with singles, but BC was only able to push one run across before Newberry’s Madison Burn (W, 4-3) halted the rally.
Game 2: Newberry 7, Brevard 1
The Wolves tagged BC starter Alyssa Miller (L, 2-5) for seven runs (six earned) over the first two innings, although the righty didn’t record an out in the 2nd inning before being replaced by Hrobak.
The sophomore held the Wolves scoreless for the final six innings but BC struggled to get their offense moving against Newberry’s Brittany Mid (W, 9-2).
The Tornados scored their only run of the game in the 3rd when Davis scored on a Newberry fielding error.
The Tornados open South Atlantic Conference on Wednesday as they host the Carson-Newman Eagles for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
