HARROGATE, Tenn.- The Brevard College baseball team scored five times in the 6th and once more in the 7th inning to make it a three-run game, but Lincoln Memorial padded their lead with five runs in the bottom of the 7th en route to a 14-6 win over the Tornados in the series opener at Hennon Field on Friday evening.
Refusing to quit, BC scored six unanswered runs to cut a 9-0 deficit to 9-6 heading into the bottom of the 7th. The Tornados finally got to LMU starter Logan Sawyer (W, 6-2) in the 6th for five runs.
Matthew Proffitt hit a solo shot to start things off, and Brock Helton cracked a three-run homer following a Hunter Donaldson RBI single as Brevard closed the gap to 9-5. BC added another run in the 7th on Chip Helton’s RBI single to left center.
The Railsplitters halted BC’s scoring streak in their half of the 7th with a five spot against lefty Kyle Pittman, effectively putting the game out of reach for BC.
The Railsplitters posted five runs in the in the 2nd inning against BC starter Kevin Hamilton (L, 2-1), although all five were unearned after a pair of BC errors. LMU added four more runs over the next two innings against Hamilton.
The righty was charged with nine runs over five innings, but only two were earned as a result of five errors by the Tornados.
The two will complete the series on Saturday with a doubleheader at Hennon Field beginning at 1 p.m.
