BREVARD, N.C.- The Brevard College softball team lost a pair of tightly contested games to South Atlantic Conference foe Tusculum College on Thursday afternoon, falling to the Pioneers 4-1 in game one and 4-3 in the nightcap.
Game 1: Tusculum 4, Brevard 1
The Tornados grabbed a quick 1-0 lead in the 2nd on Emily Boykin’s RBI double to right while Jamie Hrobak (L, 8-7) cruised through the first three frames.
Hrobak threw all seven innings in the circle for BC while striking out eight, but ran into trouble in the middle innings. The Pioneers tied the game in the 4th at 1-1 before TC’s Alix Kruel connected for a go-ahead three-run homer in the 5th.
The Tornados had base runners in the 5th and the 7th, but couldn’t get into scoring position against Tusculum’s Kelly King (W,12-8). The righty limited BC to an unearned runs on three hits and two strikeouts in seven innings.
Game 2: Tusculum 4, Brevard 3
The Pioneers used a four-run 4th inning against Alyssa Miller (L, 2-8) to erase an early BC lead on their way to completing the sweep. Miller didn’t allow a hit through three innings, and only one of the four runs charged to the senior was earned after two BC errors in the 4th.
Trailing 4-2, BC made it a one-run game in the 5th on a Kinney Davis RBI double with two outs. Tusculum’s Rachel Medley (W, 4-4) didn’t let BC get any closer though, stranding Davis in scoring position in the 5th and holding BC off the board for the final two innings after entering with one out in the 1st inning.
The Tornados struck first again in game two, securing a 2-0 lead in the 1st on three hits and a pair of Pioneer errors.
Miller started the inning with a triple to set the table, and scored on Davis’ infield single to put BC up 1-0. The Tornados went up two when Davis scored on a throwing error by Tusculum’s Miranda Beeler.
