BELMONT, N.C.- The Brevard College Tornados lost a pair of closely contested nonconference games to Belmont Abbey on Sunday afternoon at Crusader Field, falling 3-0 in the opener and 9-7 in a game two slugfest.

Game 1: Belmont Abbey 3, Brevard 0
The Crusaders only mustered three runs against BC starter Jamie Hrobak (L, 8-8) in the first game. All three came in the 3rd inning, but that would be all they needed as Samantha Jacobs (W, 14-5) limited BC to three hits in a complete-game shutout.

The Tornados had a runner in scoring position in four separated innings but couldn’t find the timely hit to start trimming their deficit.

Game 2: Belmont Abbey 9, Brevard 7
After falling behind 5-0 to start the game, the Tornados fought their way back with four runs in the 5th and three in the 6th in a valiant comeback effort in game two.

The Crusaders, however, held off the Tornados rally with four runs in their half of the 5th to extend their lead back to five runs. BC starter Alyssa Miller (L, 2-9) was charged with five runs (four earned) through 3.1 innings.

Michelle Ray drove in BC’s first run with a single to right in the 5th before back-to-back doubles by Ashleigh Ivey and Kinsey Parrish made it a one-run game.

After the Crusaders extended their lead to 9-5 with four runs in the bottom of the 5th, BC answered with three in the 6th. Emily Boykin extended her hitting streak to eight games with an RBI double, which Alyssa Miller and Kinny Davis followed with RBI singles.

The Tornados return to South Atlantic Conference action on Thursday as they visit the Mars Hill Lions for a doubleheader at Ponder Filed at 2 p.m.
