BREVARD, N.C.-John Slade drilled a two-run walk-off homer in the bottom of the 9th to give BC a 6-4 win in the opening game of a doubleheader with the Tusculum Pioneers at Gil Coan Field on Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers held off a late BC charge to take the nightcap 6-4.
Game 1: Brevard 6, Tusculum 4
Slade broke a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the 9th with a two-run homer to right field to win the game in walk-off fashion for the Tornados after Eric Renegar walked to start the inning.
Slade drove in four runs in the game, tying the game at 1-1 with a squeeze bunt in the 3rd and later at 3-3 in the 7th with a triple prior to the game-winner.
The Tornados had taken a 4-3 lead with two runs in the 7th on a sacrifice fly from Brock Helton following Slade’s RBI triple. The Pioneers then tied it with a run in the 8th.
James Phillips (W, 1-1) recorded the final six outs for BC after entering for Dustin Haithcox with two runners on in the 8th. Kevin Hamilton started for Brevard, holding TC to three runs (one earned) over seven innings.
Game 2: Tusculum 6, Brevard 4
The Tornados played from behind in game two after the Pioneers got to Zac Joyce (L, 2-4) for six runs (three earned), knocking the righty from the game with no outs in the 2nd.
Kyle Pittman and Bennett Hixson held the Pioneers scoreless for the rest of the game but TC starter Christian Raasch (W, 5-3) escaped a late BC rally to hold on.
The Tornados made it a two-run game with three runs in the 6th before going down in order in the 7th.
Slade sparked the scoring in the 6th with a two-run shot to right before Kody Spencer delivered an RBI single to center. Slade finished with six RBI’s on the afternoon, going 4-for-8 from the plate.
The Tornados started the string of four unanswered runs on Spencer’s sac fly in the 2nd.
The Tornados look for the series win on Sunday afternoon in a rubber match with the Pioneers at Gil Coan Field at 1 p.m.
