BC MEN'S BASKETBALL SET FOR 2008-09 SAC OPENER AT TUSCULUM SATURDAY

Brevard, N.C. – The Brevard College men’s basketball team will open up their 2008-09 conference season at Tusculum College on Saturday afternoon, as Coach Jones’ squad will take on the Tusculum Pioneers for a 4 p.m. tip-off.

Saturday afternoon’s match up will be the SAC opener for both teams in 2008-09.  Tusculum is currently 4-2 on the year and was picked to finish sixth in the conference in the pre-season coaches poll.  Brevard is 4-1 on the season and was picked to finish ninth in the SAC in 2008-09.

The basketball game on Saturday afternoon will feature two teams that are led by two pre-season all conference performers in Jonathan Whitson.  Whitson is averaging a team high 18.4 points per game and 9.8 rebounds per game which is both in the top-three in the SAC.  Whitson has scored in double-digits all five games thus season and has posted three double-doubles already on the season. Tusculum’s Kyle Moore is averaging a team-high and conference high 23.5 points per game, and has had a 40 point game already this season.

Last season, the Pioneers defeated the Tornados in a season sweep, defeating BC in both of their contests.  In the two teams’ first match up in Brevard, Tusculum defeated the Tornados 75-64, as senior forward Jordan Lear scored 33 points for the Pioneers on 11-of-17 shooting.  BC’s Jonathan Whitson had a team-high 21 points for the Tornados, while Shane Galloway poured in 18 points off the bench.  In the two teams’ second meeting, BC struggled offensively in the 76-43 loss, as Whitson was the only Tornado to make a field goal until Chase Lance hit a shot with less than three minutes to play in the game.  Whitson led all-scorers with 30 points, while four pioneers had double-digit points.

With already four wins this season, the Tornados have already matched their win total of four all last season.  The Tornados are two months ahead of last season, as BC didn’t pick up their fourth win last season until the second to last game of the year on February 23.

If you are unable to attend, you can catch the Tornados live via the radio broadcast brought to you by the “Voice of the Tornados” Rob Walden or live stats.   The broadcast can be heard at WSQL 1240 AM, at http://live.wsqlradio.com/wsql or at www.bctornados.com.  Live stats will be available at www.bctornados.com.
