Rock Hill, S.C. - Brevard College junior forward Jonathan Whitson has been named South Atlantic Conference men's basketball Player of the Week, it was announced Monday. Whitson averaged 21.7 ppg and 9.7 rpg in leading Brevard to a 2-1 record last week.
Monday against Emory & Henry, Whitson (Clyde, N.C.) led the Tornados to an 89-73 win in the first round of the 38th Annual Marietta Shrine Tournament in Marietta, Ohio. In just 18 minutes of action, Whitson scored 18 points and pulled down five rebounds. Tuesday in the tournament championship game, the Tornados fell, 76-72, to Marietta, but Whitson tallied a double-double with 19 points and 12 boards. For his effort in Marietta, Whitson was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Whitson was the best player on the floor Saturday in Brevard's 90-80 win over Mars Hill, the first official SAC win in program history. The Pisgah High product led all players with 28 points and 12 rebounds.
For the season, Whitson leads all Tornados with 19.1 ppg and 9.9 rpg. He has hit 58.7% of his field goal attempts.
Whitson is the third Tornado athlete to be named SAC Player of the Week in their respective sport. Men's soccer player Jussi Halonen and women's cross country runner Alycia Andrade won the award once each during the fall season.
