Brevard, N.C. – Lenoir-Rhyne University shot a simmering 65.1% from the floor and eased past Brevard College, 78-58, Wednesday night at Boshamer Gymnasium. The Tornados (10-10, 2-8 South Atlantic Conference) have lost three straight games for the first time this season.
The Bears (11-9, 6-4 SAC) hit 28 of 43 field goal attempts, by far the highest mark against the Tornados this season. Lenoir-Rhyne also hit nine of 13 three-pointers (69.2%). D.J. Blackmon (Albemarle, N.C.) and Elliott McDowell (Canton, N.C.) each scored 20 points to lead the victory.
The Tornados were led by Jonathan Whitson (Clyde, N.C.), who scored 18 points. Sean Ferretti (Amherst, N.Y.) scored a career-high 12 points.
Brevard’s only lead of the game came at the 14:30 mark of the first half, when a Whitson basket made the score 8-7. But a Blackmon jumper at the 13:57 point gave the Bears a lead they never relinquished.
An 8-0 spurt, capped by a Marcus Hodges (Wake Forest, N.C.) three-pointer, pushed the Bear lead up to 29-18. Lenoir-Rhyne then capped the first half with a 13-4 run over the last 3:46 of the period, with Hodges draining a three-ball at the buzzer, to lead 42-23 at the break.
A McDowell rainmaker 5:08 into the second half gave the Bears their largest lead, 55-33. A 12-2 Brevard rally, capped by two Joseph Chilton (Brasstown, N.C.) free throws, cut the deficit to 57-45 with 10:53 to play.
Lenoir-Rhyne came back with ten straight to put the outcome to rest. A Blackmon fast break lay-up with 7:13 to play made the score 67-45. The lead was never smaller than 15 for the rest of the game, as Lenoir-Rhyne won by an even 20.
With the win, the Bears complete a season sweep over Michael Jones’ team. Lenoir-Rhyne beat Brevard, 71-44, January 7 in Hickory, N.C.
Brevard hits the road on Saturday for an 8 p.m. game against Lincoln Memorial. The Bears travel to Newberry on Saturday, a 4 p.m. game.
