Brevard, N.C. – Led by a strong pitching effort from Spencer Linn and home runs from Josh Miller and Jackie Corn, the Brevard Tornados put a seven-game losing streak to rest with a 7-2 Thursday afternoon over Davis & Elkins at Gil Coan Field. Brevard’s record moves to 6-8 with the victory.
Linn (Fletcher, N.C.) ran his record to 2-1 with 6 1/3 innings of fantastic work. He allowed one run on four hits while striking out nine. Bryan Griswold (Woodstock, Ontario) took the loss for the Senators (1-9) after allowing two runs in 5 1/3 innings. Seth Laughter (Fletcher, N.C.) entered the game with the score 3-2 and recorded the final five outs for the Tornados to pick up his first save.
Corn (Hendersonville, N.C.) was 2-5 with a solo shot and 2 RBIs for Brevard, while Miller’s (Hendersonville, N.C.) dinger was his only hit of the day. Matthew Pruitt (Hendersonville, N.C.) was 2-4 with a pair of RBIs as well.
Brevard nearly put up a crooked number in the first inning. But with the bases juiced and two men out, centerfielder Brock Watson (Farmington, Ill.) robbed Jason Merrill (Hendersonville, N.C.) of a double that likely would have cleared the bases with a diving catch in the right center gap, keeping the game tied.
The Tornados got on the board first, however, when Miller’s shot to left field in the 2nd inning grazed the bottom of the foul pole to make the score 1-0.
After both teams were quiet for the next three frames, Corn unloaded on the first one-out pitch he saw from Griswold in the 6th, sending it 50 feet over the left field wall to double the Tornado lead.
Rusty from a ten-day break in between games, the Senator bats woke up in the 7th. After Aaron Hallett (Caledonia, N.Y.) led off the inning with a single, Shane Galloway (Rosman, N.C.) came in to relieve Linn. Hallett eventually came around to score on a Watson single to cut the lead to 2-1.
Brevard added an important run in the bottom of the inning when Stephen Mullis (Charlotte, N.C.) scored a marker with a groundout to make it 3-1.
Davis & Elkins answered in the 8th. With runners on the corners and no one out, Mike Miller (Nashua, N.H.) scored a run with a sac fly to make it 3-2. But Laughter came on to extinguish the threat, getting Hallett to ground into an inning-ending double play.
The home nine capitalized on the momentum in the bottom of the 8th with four runs. Ben Pacey (Swain County, N.C.) started the outburst with his first RBI single of the year, and two batters later Pruitt singled home a pair to make the score 6-2. Corn finished the spurt with an RBI single of his own.
The Tornados return to Gil Coan Field and South Atlantic Conference play Saturday with a doubleheader against Tusculum that starts at high noon. The Senators continue their spring break road swing with a three-game series against North Greenville, which starts Friday.
